What is Eco-Floristy?

How do our floristry techniques differ from others?

Lets start with what is meant by "Floristry techniques". Put simply it's how we make stuff out of our foliage and flowers! What products we use to hold stuff together, what packing we use to present our goods and what additives we use in our flowers conditioning.

Over 9 years running From Garden to Vase, Suzy has devised methods to minimise the use of single use plastics and create beautiful floral displays without the use of floral foam.

This really means going back to traditional methods used before the invention of floral foam.  Where possible every order that leaves From Garden to Vase is 100% biodegradable and/or reusable. â€‹

We are not going to say plastic is never used, such as floral tape and the occasional cable tie but if there is a suitable environmentally friendly alternative we'll use it. We CAN say floral foam is never used.

Put simply: Floral foam, also known as oasis foam, is a lightweight, porous material used by florists to hold and hydrate flowers in arrangements. It provides structural stability, allowing for creative designs while keeping the stems submerged in water. However, it is made from non-biodegradable plastic, which raises environmental concerns regarding its disposal and long-term impact on ecosystems.

Where floral foam may be used by others, chicken wire, moss and jam jars are used to make larger floral displays.

It is a satisfying process to devise a way of creating something magical whilst thinking about the impact it may have on the planet.

In answer to what additives we may use when conditioning flowers ready for our customers, the answer is NOTHING. Just good old fashioned clean water and the know-how of how to cut and condition the blooms nature has provided to get the best vase life possible.
